An extended version of this memorial is projected for the planned special issue of Antipode (2004; Ben Wisner, editor) dedicated to James Blaut and his life and work. We thank Jim Blaut's friends, students and colleagues who responded to our call for reminiscences and commentary, with special thanks to Gary Dunbar for his efforts to recall moments and incidents at a half-century's distance and for his newspaper searches. The authors followed a division of labor, with Mathewson responsible for the pre-Clark years and Stea responsible for the Clark years and beyond. They invite readers to send them additional information on any aspects of Blaut's life, particularly personal reminiscences.
