JOINTING, DRAINAGE, AND SLOPES IN A WEST AFRICAN EPEIROGENETIC SAVANNA LANDSCAPE

Pages 286-297 | Published online: 15 Mar 2010

Notes

Research for this paper was carried on during the years 1965–1966 when author taught in West Africa and utilized intervals between terms for field-work.

The area exhibits the same sequences of forms observed and recorded in the several traverses taken by author through the “swells” and “basins” in savannas of Africa and Brazil.

The description and analysis is based upon field work and is supported by basic geological data from S. Serpokrylow, Carte géologique du plateau de Bandiagara et de la plaine du Gondo. Notice Explicative (Paris: Imp. Theolier, 1934).

The reference map (Fig. 1) contains the area under description and is based on the West African map series, scale 1:500,000, published by the Institut Géographique National-Paris, Service Géographique, Dakar.

See A. Holmes, Principles of Physical Geology (New York: Ronald Press 1965); and , “The Pre-Cambrian of the North Arabian-Nubian Massif,”Bulletin, Geology Department, Hebrew University, Vol. 3 (1941), pp. 1 30.

Serpokrylow, op. cit., footnote 3, mentioned dips up to 14°, but no dips higher than 11° were found by author.

 Serpokrylow, op. cit., footnote 3.

 Serpokrylow, op. cit., footnote 3.

Altitudes obtained from the West African Map series, scale 1:200,000, published by the Institut Géographique National-Paris, Service Géographique-Dakar.

 Serpokrylow, op. cit., footnote 3.

Compass, clinometer, and tape were used for measurements, and joint density figured according to total length of visible and measurable joints per unit area.

Strike readings averaged for convenience of discussion; the actual range in sets combined for each section is marked in Fig. 8.

 Correlation coefficient: 0.86.

 Correlation coefficient: 0.88.
