In Memoriam

Peter Robin Gould, 1932–2000

Pages 925-934 | Published online: 29 Feb 2008

Notes

1. Peter Gould married Johanna Stuyck in July 1956. They raised three children: Katherine, Richard, and Andrew. Their first grandchild, Parker Hansen Gould, was born in 2002.

2. I have been greatly helped by Peter's wife, Jo, and by Roger Downs, chairman of the Penn State Geography Department. The source of personal and academic information about Peter Gould comes from his curriculum vita, the standard reference sources, three autobiographical notes in which Peter reflects on various periods in his life (1982b; 1985a, 345–47; and 1999a, 1–36), and his 1971 interview with Wesley Dow in the “Geographers on Film” series (now deposited at Michigan State University Library). Many of Peter's friends and colleagues have also been kind enough to share with me their reflections on his life. These include Ron Abler (AAG), John Adams (Minnesota), Antoine Bailley (Geneva), Keith Bassett (Bristol), Anne Buttimer (Dublin), Graham Chapman (Lancaster), Wesley Dow (Plymouth), Rodney Erickson (Penn State), Tony Gatrell (Lancaster), David Hodge (Washington), Ron Johnston (Bristol), David Ley (British Columbia), Richard Morrill (Washington), Gunnar Olsson (Uppsala), John Short (Maryland), David Stoddart (Berkeley), Ulf Strohmayer (Galway), John Western (Syracuse), Tony Williams (Penn State), and Rodney White (Toronto). I apologize to all those others on an even longer list that I should have contacted but failed to contact.

3. This made him 66 days older than I. This temporal advantage he mercilessly exploited over decades of correspondence by often starting his letters “Dear Peter the Younger” (even “Dear Kiddo,” when he was in an impossibly bouncy mood) and signing off grandly as “Peter the Elder.”

4. Peter later recalled his debt to Tiebout in “August Lösch as a child of his time” (1986b).

5. The list included with this memorial is a selection of the more important publications only. A fuller list taken from Gould's last curriculum vita is available from the author.

6. John Short recalls a letter from Peter on one of his manuscripts which was “thirty pages long, one of those rare reviews which was critical and generous, expansive and funny, beautifully crafted and full of good advice and scintillating insights” (John Short to PH, 26 September 2002).

7. I am grateful to the vice president of Pennsylvania State, Rodney Erickson (letter to PH, 5 January 2003), for information on the Evan Pugh professorships.

8. Information about the Gould Center for Geography Education and Outreach is available on the Penn State website at http://www.gouldcenter.psu.edu (last accessed 21 August 2003).

9. His coauthors and coeditors included R. F. Abler, J. S. Adams, A. Bailly, K. Bassett, I. Boura, I. Burton, G. S. Chapman, A. D. Cliff, H. Couclelis, D. DiBase, S. Dubrik-Unruh, S. Evans, M. Fullilove, R. Fullilove, J. Gaspar, A. C. Gatrell, N. Ginsburg, R. Golledge, A. Golub, W. Gorr, J. Greenawalt, A. G. Hoare, J. C. Huang, Y.-S. Huang, P. Iliopolou, R. Jacinto, J. Johnson, J. Kabel, T. Leinbach, A. Lyew-Ayee, F. Lukermann, R. Morrill, S. Nordbeck, D. Ola, G. Olsson, A. Pires, R. Pitts, A. Rogier, B. Rystedt, R. H. T. Smith, J. Sparks, D. Straussfogel, U. Strohmayer, N. Sugiura, E. J. Taaffe, J. Thomson, N. J. Thrift, G. Tornqvist, P. L. Wagner, D. Wallace, R. Wallace, and R. White.

10. Katherine Pella (nee Gould). “Peter Robin Gould: A celebration of his life.” Kern Graduate Center, Pennsylvania State University, 1 April 2000.

11. In a letter to PH (10 January 2003), David Hodge recalls Peter's boasting of the great fish he had caught there.
