Notes
1 This particular book, as the title suggests, is about “the skill of making things well” while “the second volume will address the crafting of rituals that manage aggression and zeal; the third will explore the skills required in making and inhabiting sustainable environments” (Sennett, Citation2008, p. 8). I also want to stress that the book needs to be read within the broader context of Sennett’s earlier works, as far as the centrality of labor in his work is concerned. The Corrosion of Character (1999) introduced the reader to the tremendous impact caused by the transition to a flexible accumulation regime. Then his The Culture of New Capitalism (2006) was published in which the author delved into the culture of our contemporary era in more detail, focusing on what time, talent, and giving up the idea of a sustained life narrative and fragmentation of life mean for us.
2 I am using the word liberal not in an American sense that refers to the political Left. I am employing the term more in line with the political center.
