The promise of underwater archaeology in retrospect

 

1 Born in Columbia, South Carolina, 1932. M.A. in Near Eastern Archaeology from the Johns Hopkins University; Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania. Has excavated five shipwrecks off the Turkish coast since 1960, and has been involved in land excavations in Greece, Turkey and Italy. Holds an Alumni Professorship in Anthropology at Texas A & M University. President of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology. His fifth book on underwater archaeology is now in press.
