1. ‘‘The man who has recognised that transference and resistance are the hubs of treatment belongs irrevocably to our ‘Wild Hunt’ ”, wrote Freud to Groddeck on June 5, 1917, at a time when being a psychoanalyst was revolutionary (CitationFreud E, 1960).

2. In the English translation, I prefer the word handling to management, as it is closer to the German and French.

3. The three registers of the real, the imaginary and the symbolic were to become the cornerstone of his theory from 1953 onwards.

5. In French there is a homophony between sea [mer] and mother [mère].
