The Educational Development Open Resources (EDOR) Project: an introduction

The EDOR Project has been a collaborative project between the GEES Subject Centre, the University of Plymouth Learning and Teaching Directorate and University of Plymouth Colleges. It follows on from the success of the JISC/HEA-funded Open Educational Resources (OER) Project run by the GEES Subject Centre in 2009–10 on C-change in GEES: Open licensing of climate change and sustainability resources in the Geography, Earth and Environmental SciencesCitation1.

As part of the JISC/HEA Phase 2 Open Materials for Accredited Courses (OMAC)Citation2 strand, the EDOR project’s aim was to establish a collection of innovative staff and educational development OER for sharing and reuse across the HE and HE in FE community. The OERs range from the discipline-specific (taken from GEES Subject Centre workshops), through to generic staff development (for example, how to teach plagiarism to students) and materials for those delivering to (or working as) HE in FE staff. The OMAC strand projects have investigated the repurposing and development of OER that support continuing professional development, either through HEA-accredited programmes, such as the PG-CAP for early career lecturers, or through the professional recognition route of gaining HEA Fellowship on the basis of the individual’s experience in learning and teaching. The HEA’s Professional Recognition Scheme was originally developed to raise the status of teaching in HE, and provides individuals with the opportunity to gain recognition at three different levels: associate, fellow or senior fellow. In particular, the Scheme is referenced to the UK Professional Standards FrameworkCitation3 (PSF) and, as such, the EDOR project has been investigating the links between CPD material and the PSF and how these links might be translated and incorporated into information about the EDOR resources.
