Abstract

A metallurgical approach is used to investigate a condition imposed on constants which predicts the deterioration with time of two solid phases firmly bonded together at the interfaces. An economical condition is also presented for composite materials in terms of economy of the constituents so that the superiority of composite material can be predicted. The mixture is assumed to be homogeneous on a macroscopic scale, but not necessarily isotropic. However, the two phases themselves are assumed to be isotropic and homogeneous. The stress and the strain fields throughout the mixture are assumed to be microscopically non-homogeneous.
