Abstract
Dextran-g-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonic acid was synthesized by free radical initiation using the potassium monopersulphate (PMS)/thiourea redox pair in an inert atmosphere. The effects of variation of different reactant on grafting parameters have been studied by varying the concentration. Grafting ratio, add-on and conversion showed a decreasing trend on increasing the concentration of thiourea, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonic acid and dextran. The grafting parameter was increased on increasing the concentration of PMS from 2×10−3 to 14×10−3 mol/dm3. The optimum temperature and time for grafting of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulphonic acid onto dextran were found to be 40°C and 120 min, respectively. The graft co-polymer was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis.
