Abstract

The thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of a series of novel pyrene derivatives, that can be used as promising monomers in the preparation of conducting polymers, have been studied in this work. Four compounds, 1-ethynylpyrene (EP), 1-(1-trimethylsilyl-1,3-butadiinyl)pyrene (TMSBDP), 1-(1-buten-3-inyl)pyrene (BP) and 1-(3,6,8-tris(methylsulfanyl)-1-pyrenyl)-1-methyloxirane (TMSPMO), have been studied. Absorption spectra of these compounds show a maximum absorption wavelength between 372 and 416 nm. Cyclic voltammograms of EP, TMSBDP and BP exhibit irreversible oxidation anodic peaks around 1260–1670 mV vs. Ag+/Ag and in some cases cathodic reduction peaks are also observed. By contrast, TMSPMO shows three anodic oxidation waves, at 1110, 1422 and 1727 mV vs. Ag+/Ag. The conductivities of these compounds have been measured in pressed pellet in the non-doped state giving values in the range of 10–2–10–3 S/cm.
