Abstract

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method is a powerful approach for numerical modeling of waveguide structures. In this paper, the method is used to determine the modal characterization of rectangular waveguide structures by means of a least-square non-linear fitting to a theoretical modal expansion. Cut-off frequencies and transversal field patterns are obtained in homogeneous and inhomogeneous waveguides showing a very good agreement with analytical results. Image dielectric waveguide are analyzed finding forward and backward waves, however the characterization of complex modes presents some difficulties.
