Abstract

Scattering and focusing characteristics of a Gaussian beam by the Luneberg lens are analyzed using a new spectral domain method. An incident Gaussian beam having complex beam value (amplitude and phase distribution) and scattering beam expression is represented as a product of the well-known expansion (vector mode function) and a weighting function. It is found that focusing effect of the Gaussian beam is wholly lower than that of the plane wave. The focal point is also shifted toward outer of sphere, because of phase lag of the beam source. A microwave indoor experiment was also performed using a stepped index (six-layer) spherical lens and horn antenna. Theoretical values are in good agreement with experimental data.
