Three Classes of Courant-Hilbert Progressive Solutions To the Scalar Wave Equation

Abstract

A subclass of focus wave mode, superluminal and subluminal-type localized solutions of the homogeneous scalar wave equation conforming to an ansatz expounded by Courant and Hilbert is presented. It yields a rich, but restricted, variety of three distinct categories of finite energy progressive wave solutions that can be either relatively undistorted localized waves or focused pulsed beams. These solutions may find applications in several physical areas.
