DETECTION OF HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS OVER THE GULF OF BOHAI SEA IN CHINA AT VISIBLE AND NEAR INFRARED (NIR) WAVELENGTHS OF REMOTE SENSING

Pages 861-871 | Published online: 03 Apr 2012

Abstract

In this study, we present the detection of harmful algal blooms over the Gulf of Bohai Sea in China at visible and near infrared (NIR) wavelengths using AVHRR (1997-2000) and MODIS (2000) data. The results show that both AVHRR and MODIS data can provide a synoptic view on algal blooms in the study area, however the quantitative use still needs to be refined in future studies. Therefore, for the purpose of monitoring and forecasting the formation of harmful algal blooms in Bohai Sea area, further studies will be investigated with more data collection of AVHRR, SeaWiFS, MODIS, and MERIS.
