ANALYSIS OF A VERTICAL ELECTRIC DIPOLE ABOVE A PLANAR DISSIPATIVE GROUND USING THE METHOD OF AUXILIARY SOURCES

Abstract

In this paper, the problem of the radiation from an infinitesimal vertical electric dipole (VED) above a semi-infinite dissipative ground is examined. The presented solution for the electromagnetic (EM) field in each region is based on the method of auxiliary sources (MAS). This method is applied by introducing sets of fictitious elementary electric dipoles, which are vertically oriented in regard to the infinite ground plane, in order to approximately describe the actual EM fields. Due to the cylindrical symmetry of the problem, the fictitious sources are circularly distributed and as a direct outcome, the rank of the resultant matrix equation is remarkably reduced. Also, it is shown that both the convergence rate and the accuracy of the method are improved by utilizing the image locations of the auxiliary sources. Moreover, an innovative concept, based on the fact that the unknown fields are generated by discrete elementary dipoles, is developed for performing antenna analysis and, thereafter, used for the calculation of the input impedance of the VED and the radiated power in the air. Finally, the agreement of the computed results with previously published data is verified over a wide range of the problem parameters.
