Abstract
This paper outlines the preliminary design and radiation characteristics of a vertical traveling wave antenna designed to operate at 407 MHz as part of a telemetry prototype where data is sent from a small ocean buoy to an airplane. The antenna is not to radiate any significant power near or below the ocean surface and diminished power along or near the vertical direction. These stringent specifications cannot be met by an off-the-shelf antenna and therefore the report focuses on the basic analysis of the proposed type of traveling wave antenna (TWA) as a special monopole over a ground plane terminated in its characteristic impedance.
