Abstract
In this paper, the strength and weakness of dispersion curves in the first Brillouin zone of a photonic crystal is addressed. Detailed discussions are presented on both the ultrasmall refraction index in free space and the negative refraction index in a photonic crystal. The authors suggest that dispersion curves in the extended zone scheme should be resumed if one wants to explore the refraction-like behavior of a photonic crystal.
