A Novel Wideband High-Temperature Superconducting Microstrip Antenna

Abstract

High-temperature superconducting microstrip antennas (HTSMAs) have a major disadvantage of very narrow bandwidth, which seriously blocks their application. In order to solve this problem, a novel antenna structure which enhances the usable bandwidth of HTSMAs is proposed. Considering that Josephson junctions can be looked as nonlinear inductances, we load the HTSMA with current-biased Josephson junctions and tune the resonant frequency of the antenna by controlling the bias current of the junctions, and thus increase the operating frequency bandwidth of the antenna. A theoretical analysis using the transmission line model is made and the feasibility of the proposed structure is demonstrated.
