Abstract

This paper presents a compact printed circuit board (PCB) monopole antenna with the size of 30 mm × 30 mm for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed antenna is fabricated on a low-cost FR4 substrate with an asymmetric annular-ring patch fed by a 50 ohm microstrip. It has been demonstrated to provide a wide bandwidth from 2.6 GHz to 14.3 GHz, completely covering the range set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for UWB operations (3.1 GHz to 10.6 GHz) with satisfying omni-directional radiation patterns. The performance of the proposed antenna has been investigated through a large amount of simulations and measurements. Good agreement has been obtained between the simulated and experimental results and it shows that the antenna is a very good candidate for UWB operations.
