Abstract

A doubly clad optical fiber with left-handed material as the inner cladding, and right-handed material as the core and the outer cladding has been analyzed by using Maxwell's equations. Some characteristic equations for hybrid modes, TE modes and TM modes are obtained. According to these characteristic equations, some curves that transverse phase constant in the core versus transverse attenuation in the outer cladding with different refractive index and different thickness of the inner cladding, are plotted, respectively. Furthermore, these curves are compared with that of the common doubly clad optical fiber. Thus, some novel propagation characteristics of guided modes in the doubly clad optical fiber including left-handed material have been obtained.
