A Complementary Lens Based on Broadband Metamaterials

Abstract

We have designed a two-dimensional planar lens based on the complementary I-shape units. The resonant frequencies for these units are extremely high so that at low frequencies the effective permittivity and permeability change slowly, which is especially useful for constructing broadband and low-loss electromagnetic devices. The distributions of refraction index for the planar lens have been evaluated, and numerical simulations have been made to determine the geometry dimensions of the corresponding units. The fabricated sample has been tested in a two dimensional near-field microwave scanning apparatus. Distributions of the measured electric fields show that the lens has good focusing ability at the working frequencies and also exhibits broadband and low-loss properties under the excitation of plane waves.
