Effects of Charged Particles Size Distribution on Microwave Propagation in Sandstorms

Pages 315-325 | Published online: 03 Apr 2012

Abstract

A general formula of the wave propagation constant through sandstorms for any distribution is developed in this paper, which is based on the forward scattering amplitude of the charged sand particle under the Rayleigh approximation and could be dealt with the case of passing through the charged particles. It is found that the microwave propagation mainly depends on the value of I 3 /I 2 and I 4 /I 2 relating to the particle size distribution. A simple relationship is shown between attenuation A and ' I 3 /I 2 , I 4 /I 2 ' of the sandstorms. Attenuation due to charged sand particles is calculated for four distributions namely Uniform, Exponential, Rayleigh and Lognormal. Results are presented, and the effect of the distributions is discussed.
