Abstract
A two-stage 0.18μ m CMOS driver amplifier (DA) for WiMAX 3.3 to 3.8 GHz using common source (CS) inductive degeneration is presented in this paper. The first-stage is a modified cascode amplifier with inter-stage inductor matching while the later stage is a conventional CS amplifier. On-wafer measurement shows an average voltage gain of 26.3 dB with 3 dB bandwidth of 0.8 GHz, an output 1 dB compression (P 1 dB) of 12.2 dBm and a power added efficiency (PAE) of 45% at 3.5 GHz while consuming 25 mW from a 1.8 V supply. At 3.5 GHz, the input and output of the proposed amplifier are matched closely to 50 with input and output return losses of –22.9 dB and –24.3 dB respectively. At P 1 dB, it achieved an output third order intercept point (OIP3) of 19.8 dBm. Measurement results obtained in this work could be used as a reference design for immediate drive amplifier implementations in commercial mobile or portable WiMAX transmitter or signal generator.
