Near-Perfect Reflection in Multilayer Structures with a Highly Absorptive Metallic Film and a Truncated Photonic Crystal Containing Defects

Abstract

We have theoretically investigated the optical properties of multilayer structures composed of a highly absorptive metal film and a photonic crystal with defects. It is found that when the photonic crystal containing defects is asymmetric, multiple near-perfect reflection peaks at defect wavelengths will appear within the total absorption broadband of the multilayer because of the highly absorptive metal film, while the high transmission peaks appear when the photonic crystal with defects is nearly symmetric. Such properties are significant for designing particular multichannel reflection and transmission filters in the visible and near infrared regions.
