Abstract
A kinetic theory is developed, using the Boltzmann equation, for the "cross" modulation imposed on a plane electromagnetic wave propagating through a plasma which is nonlinearly disturbed by the passage of a further, modulated, wave of a different fundamental frequency. Explicit expressions for the modulation transfer are derived.
