Abstract

The cepstral analysis technique may be used to recover a transient signal using only the spectral magnitude for a class of signals known as minimum phase. This paper considers the use of cepstral analysis in conjunction with the E-pulse method for target identification. A short review of cepstral analysis and the E-pulse discrimination method will be presented. The transient responses from several known targets will be derived by applying an inverse Fourier transform to the target's spectral response consisting of both magnitude and phase information. A library of E-pulse waveforms will then be constructed for these known targets. The transient response from an unknown target will be constructed using only the modulus of the target's spectral response. This information will then be used to evaluate the performance of a discrimination algorithm based on the E-pulse method. Both numerically derived scattering data and experimentally measured data for practical target models will be used in the analysis.
