Abstract

The paper describes a programme supporting families who have presented an adoption request. The main aim of the programme is to prepare petitioners to carry out their parenting role as efficiently as possible. The methodology is based on awareness-raising and on the analysis of different real-life cases. The programme enables the participants to be more objectively aware of the vicissitudes they will have to face during the adoption process, it provides them with information about different educational styles, and it also allows them to reflect on their own capabilities when facing the challenge of adopting a child. The programme is organised into twelve sessions. The content of the first six sessions is relevant to all petitioners and the last six sessions are focussed on the adoption of children with special educational needs. The most important characteristics of the programme, as well as the main recommendations for the first six sessions, based on a pilot study, are presented.
