Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyse the variety of syntactic errors committed by 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade primary school children when they write dictated numerals of a higher order than those learned. Children's productions were characterised as a function of two criteria: 1) how components of dictated Arabic numeral are written and 2) the type of relations used to join them. The progressive decrement of syntactic errors and the modification of relationships used to write numeral components through grades 1–3, and as a function of numeral type, allow us to point out the study's contribution to understanding both the development of number transcoding process and the construction of the Arabic notation system.
