Abstract

The aim of this research study was to analyse the relationship between security of attachment and the quality of peer relationships, including social skills, emotional skills, aggressiveness, prosocial behaviour, and acceptance level, as evaluated by teachers and sociometric status. The participants were 154 students (53% male and 47% female) aged between 7 and 8 years. Different attachment styles were individually evaluated with a semi-projective test (Separation Anxiety Test or SAT.). Results showed the importance of secure attachments in peer relationships. Secure children obtained significantly higher scores in most social competence variables. Indeed, in the group defined as highly social competent more than the 80% of the children were classified as secure.
