Religion revisited—anthropological and psychological standpoints

Abstract

Religion was and is no topic in psychology; rather it was a topic of psychology in its very beginning. The contemporary academic psychology ignores religion. Instead of a wide range of studies in religion neither a psychology of religion nor a subject that is commonly shared can be found. In a first step I ask for that commonly shared subject and discuss a couple of candidates and their potentials in regard to their psychological and anthropological dimensions. In a second step I briefly review the three developmental models of religion under the same perspective: What is the subject they deal with and is this subject religion or not. Like I show, it is not. In sum, we have to start a new search to gain a subject for psychology that could be identified as religion. This needs in first place the courage to think systematically and theoretically independent from theology as well as psychology itself.

Resumen

La religión ni ha sido ni es un tema en psicología, más bien ha sido un tema de psicología en sus inicios. La psicología académica contemporánea ignora la religión. En vez de existir una amplia variedad de estudios sobre la religión, no hay ni una psicología de la religión ni un tema común compartido. En un primer paso, se plantea ese tema común compartido y se evalúan diversos candidatos y sus respectivos potenciales con respecto a las dimensiones psicológica y antropológica. En un segundo paso, se hace una breve revisión de los tres modelos evolutivos de la religión bajo el mismo enfoque: qué tema están tratando y ese tema es o no el de la religión. Como se demuestra, la respuesta es negativa. En resumen, debemos iniciar una nueva búsqueda para lograr para la psicología un tema que se pueda identificar como religión. Para ello, ante todo es necesario poder pensar de forma sistemática y teóricamente independiente de la teología y de la propia psicología.
