Probabilistic ideas of the youngster

Abstract

The thinking of high school students (14 to 18 years-old) about probability and random processes is studied in this paper. This research follows the frame of Fischbein concerning the role of intuition and mathematics in the learning of mathematics concepts.

It was constructed a questionnaire of 28 items covering all concepts of theory of probability which is taught at the high-school-level. Students should judge the appropriateness of the proposed solutions to the items, also should estimate the confidence of their judgements.

The main results of the study are: a) A description of the probabilistic ideas of the youngster; b) A classification of the ideas based of the level of intuitive acceptance; c) The contingent nature of the probabilistic reasoning.
