Identity and intimacy in adolescence: Sequential or concomitant processes?

Pages 45-53 | Published online: 23 Jan 2014

Abstract

Erikson's theory considers that access to intimate relationships is governed by the achievement of stable and consolidated personal identity. However, recent work has suggested that one may dealing with concomitant rather than sequential phenomena. The aim of the present study is to shed further light on these trends from within the framework of the relationships between dating couples. The sample comprised 370 adolescent students with an age range of 16–20 years. The variables employed were personal identity, the relationship experience and the intimacy felt by the subjects in their relations.

The results show that the establishment of dating relationships and the intimacy felt by the subjects are strongly related to identity in the case of the women, while the process would be relatively independent of identity in the case of the men. The results are discussed in terms of different process of socialization still in operation between men and women.
