Abstract

Much research has suggested that adolescent girls have closer and more intimate relationships with their friends that boys do. The aim of this study was to find out, what role is played by certain personal attributes, such as expressiveness and instrumentality, in these differences.

The sample was composed of 602 students (279 boys and 323 girls) between the ages of 14 and 19 from Salamanca, Spain. A questionnaire was used to collect information on their network of close friends, the level of intimacy they had with their best friend and the degree of expressiveness and instrumentality of the subjects. Although in some aspects of friendship the importance of instrumentality and expressiveness is important, regardless of the sex of the subjects, in others, specially regarding the level of intimacy with their best friend, these personal attributes do not account for the important differences found between boys and girls.
