Abstract

This article reflects on the little attention that social psychology has paid traditionally to the family. First, it analyzes whether the family is present in the areas that social psychology has paid attention to traditionally. Second, a quantitative and qualitative study of the category “family” in the Psychological Abstracts is carried out. Third, a revision of the main research areas that have configured the study of the family in the social sciences is made. It is shown that although the relationship between the family and social psychology has not been formalized or institutionalized (in terms of its presence in manuals and textbooks or in its format as a discipline), a long relationship exists in fact for the large body of scientific investigation. Finally, some objectives and goals of a social psychology of the family are proposed.
