Abstract

The main objective of this research is to explore the peculiarities underlying prejudice and discriminatory expressions that non gypsy people show towards gypsies. 290 high-school students answered a questionnaire, which covered some variables present in the sociopsychological literature about prejudice and racism. Results confirm most of the relationships between prejudice (blatant and subtle) toward gypsies and variables such as perceived similarity with the outgroup, nature of contact with the outgroup, emotions felt towards members of the out group and the perception of interdependency with the ingroup. Moreover, a regression analysis shows that the most predictive variable of the prejudice attitude toward gypsies is the perception of similarity between ingroup and outgroup, followed by the positive and negative emotions toward the gypsies.
