Abstract

This study focuses on the analysis of the discourse strategies and semiotic devices used by technicians working in public offices for employment and by unemployed persons during interviews, in which moment and with which aim they make use of them, and which the effects are on the interactive dynamics.

The sample is made up by two technicians of the “Servicio Público de Empleo”, Sexpe (employment public service) and 18 unemployed people with high risk of social exclusion: functional illiterate, immigrants, and persons with mental health problems.

A process of training in communicative skills is proposed dealing with becoming aware of their own behaviour. A study is done by using video recording, interviews and questionnaires, following three phases previously designed.

The results show that the knowledge and training in communicative skills, both verbal and non-verbal, foster the adaptation of these professionals to their interlocutors' personal characteristics and decrease the control they exercise over the interview.
