Abstract

A new scale measuring acculturation stress in the native population caused by immigration, particularly South American immigration, is presented. Our work is based on the notion of perceived threat taken from the Integrated Threat Theory (Stephan and Stephan, 1996). A principal component analysis of the scale carried out with data from 770 participants produced a two-dimensional structure: interaction stress and stress for resources. The final scale is made up of 16 items plus three control items for social desirability. Reliability analyses have found some very satisfactory internal consistence indexes:.91 for the general acculturation stress scale and.91 and. 88 for the two subscales. The statistical data obtained allow us to offer a measurement tool that contributes to the study of acculturation processes.
