Abstract

The goal of this study was to analyse adolescents' prosocial and violent behaviours toward parents and teachers, and the relationship between these behaviours and family and school environments. The sample was made up of 687 adolescents of both sexes, aged between 12 and 16 years and from the province of Guipúzcoa (Spain). The adolescents reported higher rates of prosocial behaviours toward parents than toward teachers, but there were no differences in violent behaviours. Family cohesion and conflict were predictive factors for child-to-parent violence, and were mediated by the antisocial behaviours. Similarly, school organisation and family conflict were significant predictors of violence against teachers, through the mediating effect of adolescents' antisocial behaviours. Thus, family conflict was an important risk factor for antisocial behaviours and for violent behaviours against authority.
