Efectos del Desempleo y el Sexo sobre la Autoestima Positiva, Negativa y Global

Resumen

En los últimos años, un número importante de investigaciones se dedicaron a estudiar los efectos del desempleo sobre la autoestima. Las investigaciones realizadas hasta el momento han mostrado resultados contradictorios, pues mientras varios investigadores han encontrado menor autoestima en los desempleados, otros no han obtenido este resultado. Estos resultados pueden deberse a una inadecuada consideración de la autoestima como una medida global, cuando está formada por dos componentes, uno positivo y otro negativo. En el presente artículo, la autoestima es evaluada en sus dos componentes. Los resultados indican que el desempleo sólo afecta a la autoestima negativa y que cuando aparecen efectos sobre la autoestima global se deben a un artefacto estadístico.

Abstract

In recent years, an important number of articles have been devoted to the effects of unemployment on self-esteem. Studies carried out up to now show contradictory evidence: while several researchers have found low self-esteem in unemployed people, other authors have not found this result. It is possible that this contradictory evidence results from not properly taking into account self-esteem as a global measure. Previous research has shown that self-esteem has two different dimensions: positive self-esteem and negative self-esteem. In this article self-esteem is measured in its positive and negative aspects. Results indicate effects of unemployment on negative self-esteem, but not on positive self-esteem. The implications of this research are discussed.
