Abstract

Social Knowledge about deception is conceptually represented in categories referring to the daily life scenarios in which deception occurs (with one's family, relatives, friends, strangers and in the workplace). In the present research we test the effects of such knowledge on the process of judging truth or lies.

Study 1 has revealed that judges considered as more prototypical those descriptions that match the expected response in social situations of lying. The results of Study 2 show that the observers' expectations influence their judgements about senders.
