Abstract

This article presents the results of an empirical study, the proposal of which was to explore the meaning that a set of representative images of non-figurative twentieth-century art could have for the public. To do so, the semantic differential technique was used. Based on the subjects' responses to 40 bi-polar scales, a factorial analysis was made. The results of this analysis indicate the presence of 5 factors which, combined, explain 57% of observed variance. The means of the factorial scores were also analysed for various images in several groups of subjects with different levels of education and attitudes toward modern art.
