Abstract

Individualism has been a typical object of study of many social sciences for a long period of time. From an historical point of view, Iglesias (1991) has underlined the central role played by this concept in Montesquieu's thinking, while Avia (1995) has pointed to its importance in the psychological developments regarding the «self». Its ethical implications represent the core of Camps' (1993) intellectual concerns. Finally, its sociological underpinnings have been discussed by Béjar (1993). It is argued here that in Social Psychology, where individualism came to be accepted as an object of study only after the publication of Hofstede's book in 1980, special attention should be given to all the facets of this concept, as a prerequisite for avoiding the problems of simplification and reductionism.
