Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between happiness and prosocial behavior taking as departure point data from surveys carried out by CIRES with samples drawn from the Spanish population. We adopt a theoretical perspective which can be considered largely sociopsychological. A happiness index (derived from previous scales) as well as an index of prosociality is elaborated, the latter based on items that deal with problems such as the friendliness toward immigrants and marginal people and contributions to associations and social movements. The structure of relationships between both indexes is studied through a correspondence analysis that, in a complementary way, takes also into account the incidence of the postmaterialism (as measured by Inglehart's questionnaire) and the «basic” (according to CIRES) “attitudes», associated mainly with dogmatism.
