An attempt at a convergent validation of Bass' MLQ (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire)

Abstract

MLQ's viability to understand Transformational Leadership meaning is called in question by Smith and Peterson (1990). These authors suggest a review of this measure while pointing out that their critique is also extended to Charisma studies. Our purpose in this work is to perform a convergent validation of this measure through a structured interview. In order to do this, we take into account points of view different from those of Bass himself, such as the approaches suggested by Howell and Frost, Conger and Kanungo, and House and Shamir. There are two phases in this study: a) application of MLQ to 39 work groups (total N=199 subjects), b) after the selection of the groups high in charisma (3.8 is the criterial score equivalent to a 67 or a higher percentile), their leaders and two people randomly selected inside each group are interviewed. The criterion of convergent validity would be fulfilled if there were high correlations between subjects' answers in the first and second phase.
