Abstract

This paper deals with the relation between social psychology and tourism. It is focused on the study of how and to what extent the tourism experience affects the participants, i. e., tourists and residents. To begin with, the influence of tourism on the change of attitude of tourists is analyzed from the intergroup perspective, more specifically by the one represented by Social Identity Theory. It is shown that the attitudinal change arising from the touristic experience is due to comparison processes between tourists and residents. Secondly, social perception in the touristic context is explored, mainly through residents' attitudes to the touristic impact. In this respect, it is found that residents of mature touristic areas tend to display a clearly positive attitude toward the touristic phenomenon.
