Abstract

The main objective of this field study was to analyse the different features of prejudice towards gypsies. 290 high school students answered a questionnaire, which covered some of the variables present in the sociopsychologicalliterature about prejudice and racism. Results confirm the contradictory and ambiguous character of prejudice towards gypsies in its blatant and subtle nature. Using Pettigrew and Meertens' (1995) typology, we found significant differences among equalitarian, subtle and blatant subjects in relation to the following variables: emotions toward gypsies, attitude toward multiculturalism and gypsy assimilation, the extent of the social distance and contact which the subjects are willing to have with gypsies, perception about the coercitive relative power that gypsies and non gypsies have, and agreement about the current power distribution between both groups.
