El papel de la literatura en la clase de lengua extranjera

The role of literature in the foreign language classroom

Resumen

Es un hecho fácilmente constatable que los textos literarios apenas son considerados en la clase de lengua extranjera en los niveles preuniversitarios, y que cuando se utilizan, habitualmente se viene trabajando solamente la comprensión lectora. Al efecto negativo de la enseñanza comunicativa en el uso de la literatura en la clase de lengua extranjera, se podría añadir asimismo otra serie de factores, entre los que destaca la excesiva dicotomía existente entre lengua y literatura; muchos docentes se consideran capaces de enseñar lengua, pero no así literatura.

A continuación se presentan una serie de actividades originales basadas en la versión adaptada de la obra Things Fall Apart de Chinua Achebe. Ante la trivialidad preponderante en la mayoría de los materiales diseñados para la enseñanza de la lengua extranjera, la literatura nos ofrece la posibilidad de analizar y tratar cuestiones de una mayor complejidad y sutileza. Es por ello que las actividades propuestas fomentan el desarrollo de las cuatro destrezas lingüísticas y la atención a las formas lingüísticas de un modo integrado, al tiempo que se impulsa el desarrollo personal, social y moral del discente.

Abstract

It is a proven fact that literary texts are seldom used in the foreign language classroom at pre-university levels, and when they are, they are mainly used to work on reading comprehension. Apart from the communicative method's negative effect on the use of literary texts in the EFL classroom, there are other factors which exert a negative influence, such as the language-literature dichotomy; many teachers believe that they are capable of teaching language but not literature.

Next, several original tasks based on the adapted version of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart are put forward. The triviality of most English teaching materials is well attested and it is in this context where literature has a lot to say, because it gives us the opportunity to deal with subtleties and complexities which are not always present in other sorts of texts. The tasks proposed in this article provide practice of the four language skills and reflection on language forms in an integrative approach, while at the same time the learners 'personal, social and moral development is boosted.
