Abstract

This paper analyses the vision of the educational system held by rural students, children of peasants who work both in agriculture and other occupations. 28 students of the last three grades of primary school and 17 students of secondary school were interviewed in order to assess their perception about their future, school knowledge, the student role, the teacher role and the value of the diploma as regards the work market. The analysis of the interviews has shown that rural students build their image of the school system in relation to the cultural meanings of two essential educational institutions: school and family. These discourses heve been developed in a context of conflict between the cultural patterns of these institutions. In any case, we examine how their social group's culture, (the social, working and familiar relations' model of the rural society), sieves the discourse of rural youths about formal education.
