Abstract

Historically and at present, multiculturalism and multilingualism have been and are inherent dimensions to European societies, irrespective of the population and/or geographical area of a given country. In the case of small European countries, among which we can include the Principality of Andorra, the importance of the phenomenon must be measured taking into account certain specificities at a sociocultural level. The present paper analyses how linguistic and cultural diversity in the Andorran educational system is managed, particularly in the Escola Andorrana (EA—Andorran School), and more specifically, with respect to the Linguistic Approach and the Reception Plan for Recently Arrived students of the Escola Andorrana. Both programmes support cultural and linguistic diversity in EA classrooms by (i) promoting communication, as established in official curricula, through the use of languages, and (ii) giving attention and support in order to integrate students recently arrived to the country and the educational system.
