Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the relationship between perceived usefulness of physical education classes and the level of regular physical/sport activity in schoolchildren from the Region of Murcia (Spain). For this purpose, we validated the IAFHE scale (Inventory of regular physical activity in schoolchildren). The scale was administered to a random sample of 1120 students, aged between 10 and 12 years. The independence tests administered and multivariate analysis (MANCOVA) computed show that in both males and females the perceived usefulness of physical education classes is a variable that is significantly related to an increase in overall levels of regular physical activity in schoolchildren. Average scores for the physical and sport activity in school subscale are significantly higher than those for the voluntary sporting activity subscale, and those observed during children's leisure time. This circumstance is probably due to the compulsory nature of the former, which lead us to propound the need to increase physical education in the school curriculum timetable.
